What's a Lutheran? and Why Are You Having a Beer Festival?
What’s a Lutheran?
A Christian. A Protestant, like Presbyterians, Methodists, or Baptists.
Named for Martin Luther, we worship Jesus Christ. We think Luther had some powerful insights both about God and about who we are as human beings.
Who was Martin Luther, and why is he running around Oktoberfest?
A 16th-century German monk whose work led to the Protestant Reformation.
He believed God’s love and grace were available to all people as a free gift from God.
Why is he carrying around a hammer?
500 years ago, Martin Luther listed 95 things he found wrong with the church and nailed them to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany, to invite a scholarly debate.
The posting of the “95 Theses” is usually given as the official start date of the Protestant Reformation.
What do Lutherans believe?
Lutherans believe that God has saved us by God’s grace, and not by anything we do (or don’t do!) to deserve it.
We believe that even though we are not perfect in any way, God loves us and frees us to love and serve others, even those who may not look like us.
Where can I find a Lutheran?
Everywhere! Approximately 74 million Lutherans live and worship all over the globe, from Africa to North America.
Lutheran Services in America is one of the largest providers of social services in North America, serving 6 million people each year in the United States and the Caribbean, or one in 50 Americans every year.
Right here! Oktoberfest is sponsored by Incarnation Lutheran Church, worshipping here in Columbia since 1921.
Incarnation believes that ALL are welcome!
Fun Fact
People sometimes confuse Martin Luther, the 16th century German reformer,
with Martin Luther King, the 20th century American civil rights leader.
They have more in common than you might think.
Martin Luther King, Jr. was actually born Michael King in 1929.
However, in 1934, his father, then-named Michael King, Sr., made a trip to Germany
and became acquainted with 16th century Martin Luther’s religious writings.
He was so impressed by them that he changed both his name
and his son’s name to Martin Luther King.
The rest, as they say, is history.
